Experience the life of a tea planter in Ceylon during colonial times...
Location:
(see Maps page). We are at the foothills of the Knuckles range of mountains. The mountains, with peaks which resemble the knuckles of a fist are 1,800 – 1,900 meters in altitude. As the range is completely exposed to strong winds and clouds, forests grow low, covering hill tops along a ridge of approx. 30 kms. in length. These forests are known as Cloud Forest, Misty Forest and Montane Forest. The physiognomy of these tropical forests is similar throughout tropical mountains and characterised by umbrella shaped tree crowns and small coriaceous leaves. Lower temperatures are a reason for very slow growth of trees and the selection of species that can survive in this environment is limited. Where the wind is strong, as in the Knuckles Mountain range, dwarfed forests and low bushes grow on exposed ridges and peaks. Pygmy flora is unique to this area. Accommodation: The
